This CPI simulation tool was developed for policy makers and climate practitioners to examine the opportunity for applying carbon pricing instruments in support of implementation of NDC targets. The overall objectives of this e-learning course are to: - provide policymakers with the understanding how CPIs impact socio-economic factors of development. - examine scenarios and pathways for implementation of NDC targets using CPIs. - examine opportunities to invest revenue in increasing natural climate solution coverage to close the gap to net-zero.
With the objective to identify realistic, strategic, and potentially game-changing interventions, ESCAP convened government officials, civil society organizations and other experts to define and explore different scenarios for Asia and the Pacific in 2040 using transformative foresight approaches. This opening session will introduce the findings of the Foresight Report on environment and development in Asia and the Pacific.
This training session will focus on the “How” and “What” can be done at the nationally and locally to raise climate ambitions based on the national circumstances of each member State. Furthermore, the training session will provide opportunities for hands-on tools for simulation of scenarios and policy development, and for discussion on challenges and best practices. Last but not least, the training session will also address the role of all stakeholders, including government, private sector and civil society to ensure joint action to reduce emissions and impacts of climate change.
Environmental policy often fails because the motivations and decision-making of key stakeholders are poorly understood. This session will show how environmental policy impact can be strengthened by applying behavioral science to steer individual decision-making and behaviour in a more sustainable direction. The session will present an overview of behavioral science for environmental policy, share practical insights from case studies and “soft-launch” ESCAP’s self-paced e-learning course.
This opening session will introduce the importance of and applications of the Foresight Report on environment and development in Asia and the Pacific which was compiled by Sohail Inayatullah and ESCAP.
This session will focus on how to link innovative methodologies for addressing air pollution at the local level with national and regional efforts. Through this material, participants will understand how machine learning approaches can help fill gaps in available science to focus action plans on the most impactful policies. These local action plans will be grounded in cooperation through city networks and regional modalities on air pollution.
The purpose of this training module is to promote the design of effective policies that safeguard the health of ecosystems in Asia and the Pacific. In order to achieve this, the session will build and reinforce capacities of government officials through the exploration of integrated environmental actions, ranging from approaches for action on the nexus between biodiversity, ecosystems, health and climate to joint action on ocean, freshwater and climate. The session will have a particular emphasis on the One Health approach and on ocean and climate synergies. Furthermore, the session will feature the launch of a selection of knowledge products on the biodiversity-health-climate nexus and One Health, developed by ESCAP, and including some products funded by the Government of France.
The course will deliver guidance on how the region’s cities can become smart, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable. Through a focus on four integrated thematic pillars (Urban and Territorial Planning; Urban Resilience; Smart Cities and Technologies; and Urban Finance), participants will learn of policy pathways that can be deployed and additional tools, including the Voluntary Local Review (VLR) process, to build back better within the context of post-pandemic recoveries.
The common threat of air pollution across the region requires multi-level interventions and more significant efforts to strengthen regional cooperation. However, the inadequate capacities of many national governments and local authorities to address their air quality issues has (1) limited the scale and pace of actions and interventions that are necessary to significantly reduce air pollution across the region and (2) also inhibited regional dialogue and cooperation that could lead to regional modalities for long-term actions. This thematic dialogue will focus on innovative air pollution solutions and best practices, including policy interventions, on gender and public health. The session will be part of the over-all approach to a regional dialogue series to raise awareness and build the capacity of stakeholders to identify the most appropriate innovations and utilize existing and emerging technologies in the development of their air quality policies. Subregional dialogues will be organized for North and Central Asia, East and North-East Asia, South-East Asia and South and South-West Asia, in coordination with the respective Sub- regional Offices. In addition to this thematic dialogue on gender and health, a thematic dialogue will be held on data and technology.
